Larry Jack’s Magical Music Tour – 3/10/16 – 3/14/16

Hey guys,
The only thing you need to remember this week is that it is Stopover weekend. If you don’t have a ticket to my favorite event of the year, stop reading right now and go order a ticket. If you are OCD like me, you have probably already mapped out your entire schedule. If not, this is my weak attempt at a schedule.

I try to schedule a band every half hour and probably only follow about two-thirds of my pre-made schedule. Several time slots have two (or more) bands scheduled, I plan to wing it then. And, unless they perfect human cloning by Saturday at 10pm, I have a real problem, with five on the list.

Feel free to make comments or suggestions on anything you see, I really base my choices on about a 15 second listen to the YouTube posted in the Stopover site. You should probably check out Tom’s Stopover Survival Guide posted elsewhere on hissing lawns, there is some great advice. I would also recommend searching out the new Connect, with Anna Chandler’s exhaustive research into all the bands. This week’s DO has a good guide also. I hope everyone enjoys themselves and I know I will see a lot of you out this weekend having fun.  Happy Stopover!
PS – It’s gonna be a hot weekend, dress appropriately.

Stopover Spotlight… Faux Ferocious

Faux Ferocious plays Thursday March 10th at The Jinx // 10pm

Faux Ferocious, out of Nashville, Tennessee, plays rock and roll that relies on tension and its release. Anchored by the motorik beats of drummer Reid Cummings, their songs are slick and sharp that, at moments, barely stray away from the simplest punk beat but then suddenly turn on a dime, taking the breath right out of you. The two frontmen often sing simultaneously in a deranged yet monotonic manner, as if the devil and angel on your shoulder are now pitted against you, whispering about encounters with ghost towns and bemoaning the bullshit of dead end jobs.

The vocalists, Jonathon Phillips and Terry Kane, are also the guitar players, trading off fuzzy chords and dissonant licks. The band is touring in support off their latest record, Blues Legends, a DIY effort in recording which makes their trademark garage rock and glam fuzz moments sound all the more vintage. If you’ve never seen Faux Ferocious live, they are a can’t miss act at this year’s Stopover.I asked the guys a couple of questions, answers below.

Stopover Spotlight… Tedo Stone

Tedo Stone plays on Friday March 11th at Congress Street Social Club // 7pm

Tedo Stone‘s new album Marshes was released last fall but the music is really suited for right now as the days grow warmer. Stone and his band have made an excellent country rock record full of incredible tonal quality, catchy hooks, and layered guitar work that showcase Stone’s personality. This is music for fans of Whiskeytown; for people who want to hear some sorrow with confidence and soul. His disposition brings to mind of Caleb Followill (Kings of Leon): someone who has been beat down by love or circumstance but still not afraid to show swagger.

On the slow number, “Get Off”, Stone opens up about his own persona, but with a wry smile: “How hard do i seem? Do i seem real loaded? Do i seem real mean? Or do i just seem sweet?” And it is this sentiment where I find this band incredibly interesting. On their infectious lead single, “Mind Wasted”, the lyrics confront that alcohol might be your downfall, yet the song itself is even more enjoyable with a PBR in your hand. I talked with bassist Frank Kieth IV about Tedo Stone’s music and influence.

Stopover Spotlight… Triathalon

Triathalon plays Saturday March 12th at Wild Wing Café // 10 pm.

Stopover marks the return of Savannah’s beloved chill maestro, Adam Intrator and his band Triathalon. After five years of providing Savannah with their (incredibly) original blend of surf rock, garage, and r&b, Intrator moved to NYC whilst his other counterparts stayed down south, keeping busy with Wet Socks (Hunter Jayne) and Chilton (Chad Chilton). Triathalon kicks off another tour supporting their quietly majestic Nothing Bothers Me, a record with the textural landscapes a la Feel Flows” yet the quirkiness of early Mac Demarco records. I talked with Adam about his foray into the big city as well as more pressing matters such as the chilliest herbal supplement of them all…

Georgia Mountain Stringband at Tybee Island Social Club – photos

After what was reported as a rowdy success, playing with City Hotel on Thursday evening at The Sentient Bean, the guys from Georgia Mountain Stringband took a night off of downtown performing to have an evening out on the island. Tybee Island Social Club continues to book great music even during the slower winter months, and is a regular musician’s hang-out every Sunday for Bluegrass Brunch. GMSB is a perfect fit for the laid back atmosphere of #TybSocialClub and I’m hopeful that we’ll see them again there this summer.

The guys from GMSB (Atlanta) tend to do multiple show weekends in the lowcountry every few months and are tied into the bluegrass/Americana connection between our town and Atlanta that has forged quite a few friendships & shared stage-bills. Savannah has one more chance to hear the band on this trip at Moon River Brewing Company; 3-5-16 from 4-7pm.

Here are a few photos from tonight, with more images and a video from a recording at ArtLab Sessions that was shot last year, after the jump.

Larry Jack’s Magical Music Tour – 3/3/16 -3/8/16

Hey guys,
Another good weekend of music ahead. There are shows all over town this week, something has to be close to where you live. There is bluegrass, punk, classical, blues, and just about anything else you can think of this week, so be sure to try to catch some tunes somewhere this week. And congratulations to the Bayou Cafe on their 25th Anniversary, that is quite a feat for a bar to be open for 25 years.  I would also like to point out that Sunday will be the last Songwriter Series at Johnny Harris Restaurant.  I’m betting this could be the last time many of you have the opportunity to visit that location, I would recommend taking advantage of the show to make one last visit.  I hope to see some of you around this weekend, be sure to say “hello”.

Forced Entry, Shermans Boot, The Anxiety Junkies and Feeding Tube at The Jinx – photos

Words by Niema Ross, photos by Tom Cartmel:

In the punk scene, which is based on an angry shout back to what society thinks we should be, there are those who take the time to create the anthems we sing along with. They have to walk a fine line between expressing unbiased life experiences and fighting against assumptions and prejudice.

Warning: mosh pits do not come with liability insurance. Don’t like aggression? If you stand at the edge of musical violence, expect to get hit.

Check out Tom’s shots of the recent show at The Jinx with Forced Entry, Shermans Boot, The Anxiety Junkies, and Feeding Tube:

House Show For One – video

A great resource for watching/hearing Savannah’s local performers is House Show For One, which is the creation of musician (Garden Giant) Devin Smith. As is the case with quite a few of Savannah’s musicians, his talent isn’t limited to just strumming chords. He’s also a well-rounded professional on many creative fronts. Not only are these recordings well produced, but in filming at each artist’s residence they bring an intimacy not usually felt in the bar, club, or coffeehouse scene. I was thrilled to recently record one of these sessions as Waits & Co.

Here are a few of the House Show For One videos, with more available by clicking on either of the highlighted links.

Agent Orange, In The Whale, and The Wave Slaves at The Jinx – photos

Another fun, old school punk show last week, sort of the West Coast answer to the East Coast punk show by The Queers a couple weeks earlier, Agent Orange blasted through a couple dozen sing-a-long skate classics in front of the ever present red velvet curtains of The Jinx. A good crowd for a Tuesday did indeed sing along and mosh to the Orange County band’s surf infused tunes. Is Tuesday the best night for a show? No. No, it is not. But, hey, we’ll take what we can get.

Local surf rockers The Wave Slaves cranked out their classic tunes while Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive played on the TVs above the bar. Weird dichotomy? Uhhh, yeah, I should say so.

Next up was a noisy punk duo out of Denver, In The Whale. I like noise, and I like punk, so it follows that I liked In The Whale. A lot. Solid tunes and GREAT stage presence, I’d love to see them again.

Power trio Agent Orange has been cranking it out since 1979. Mixing classic surf and punk covers with their own legendary tunes, I counted around 30 songs on the set list. They didn’t quite make it through all 30, but not one of the many that they did play was a let down. There’s a reason these guys have been around so long, and it was on full display at The Jinx. Great stuff, hopefully they make it through town again soon.

The Accomplices at ArtLab Sessions – photos

The team from ArtLab Sessions came together again to record a new set of videos. Today’s session was with The Accomplices who are on a bit of a run right now. We posted earlier about their upcoming performance with Peter Rowan at the Mars Theatre just up the road a piece in Springfield, Georgia on March 5th.

We’ll have a post with multiple new releases from ArtLab Sessions soon. Check out a few photos from today, with more images after the jump.

Broken Glow album release party, w/ BBXF at Southbound Brewing – photos

Broken Glow released their album Filament with a great party last weekend at Southbound Brewing Company in West Savannah. A big crowd, a special brew made just for the night, lots of kick ass rock and roll, even Chazito’s Latin Cuisine food truck — what more could one want?

BBXF opened the night with a strong set of southern/psych rock, and then Broken Glow played two sets, including the entire new album, which you can check out here:

The lighting was trippy, but a little tricky for photos. Click on through for the full gallery.
