Larry Jack’s Magical COVID Shows

Hey everybody,

I am going to try putting this post up and see what happens. I find it very difficult to find what shows are online, I’m hoping that maybe some of you can find some or find them easier. I thought I would put a post with the few shows I can find and hope that people will add upcoming shows in the comments. If people add shows, I will periodically update the post. It will not work if no one adds any shows, so please feel free to add any shows you are putting on or know about.

Larry Jack’s Savannah Stopover “Schedule”

Hi everybody,
It’s time for the happiest day of the year, the first day of Stopover. On Thursday, we are still in good health and feel like we are invincible. By Saturday, we look a little beat up and not feeling so great. I guess this is not really a schedule, it’s more a list of who I wish I could see. Hopefully, I won’t hurt myself trying to do it.
I would like to remind everyone to make sure to eat while you are out this weekend. And if you can get in a couple of non-alcoholic beverages while you are out and about, that would be a good idea.
I hope everyone has a Happy Stopover. I am pretty sure I will.

Larry Jack’s Stopover Show History

Hi everybody,
As you may have guessed, I am getting pretty excited for Stopover X this weekend. I find it hard to believe it will be ten years. I have always said a festival just like this in my hometown would be my first wish if I find that genie in a bottle.
I went to the Stopover Photography Exhibit last week and it got me reminiscing about old Stopover shows. So of course I gathered a list of all the old shows I have seen. If anyone actually happens to look at this list, I hope it brings back some good memories for them, like researching several of these shows did for me.
PS – Of course this is not a list of all the Stopover Shows, but it’s a pretty good cross-section. And if anyone’s wondering but didn’t feel like counting, my Stopover show total is 301. I think I owe Kayne Lanahan a drink for all the good times.

The High Divers take Texas

Admittedly The High Divers may be my favorite band to come out of the lowcountry in the last decade, and upon hearing that they were finally headed out to Texas gave me a boost. While Dallas certainly has a ton of local, and touring musicians in the year and a half that I’ve been here I haven’t found the depth of soul that the brackish water back home seems to inspire. Locals tell me that what I’m looking for is more likely to be heard a thirty minute drive away in Fort Worth.

I first was made aware of this talented quartet by my good friend Kurtis Schumm of Tybee Island Social Club infamy. The artist/musician/restauranteur thought that they’d be a great fit for the now shuttered Trinity Sanctuary Concert series, and after catching them at a local Savannah performance I immediately reached out and booked them. On that hallowed ground they blew me away with their camaraderie, professionalism, and incredible songwriting, mixing up a variety of genres into their sound. Since that date it’s been a pleasure to watch (from a distance) these musicians put in the cross-country mileage, pounding out show after show, and continuing to write inspiring original music.

Before their Dallas show this weekend I had a moment to catch up with Luke Mitchell, the frontman and red-bearded rapscallion on the band’s latest news that they have signed with management (Blind Ambition Management), recently wrapped up a short tour with Cicada Rhythm, and plan to keep pushing on down the road to more dates. One of the hardest working bands I’ve worked with, these troubadours deserve all of the success they’ve received thus far, and what undoubtedly will continue to come their way. If you hear of The High Divers coming to your town make sure to catch them while you still can in intimate settings as I’m sure that won’t be the case for much longer.

The following are photos from their performance in Dallas, Texas at The Rustic Dallas. I hope the Lone Star State gets more chances in the future!

Forest Evil, Dead Register, Toke at The Jinx

“You ever listen to stoner metal?”

“You ever listen to stoner metal, HIGH?!” – Guy at The Jinx.

Forest Evil. Photo by Tom Cartmel. Music courtesy Satan.

Rock ‘n’ roll is standing on a pentagram with a shot of Jägermeister in one hand the New Testament in the other. (True story.)

All Hail Satan.

The Jinx and traveling/local stoner metal bands are long-time friends. Sometimes, especially when Weedeater plays, Savannah’s metal bar is packed to the hilt with black-clad goons, who come mostly bearded, with a traceable history of devout Sabbath worship, and mustaches smoldering with the smell of marijuana.

On Saturday, Feb. 7, Forest Evil, Dead Register and Toke preached the metal gospel to a few stray souls willing to receive the good word of the Pentagram dogma.

Local camo-wearing Forest Evil delivered the opening eulogy with fervent devotion to the all-mighty Black Sabbath firmly established at the core of their repertoire.

“Sludge metal is just Sabbath worship slowed down.” – Some asshole at the bar.

Forest Evils’ guitarist (name unknown) has honed in on rather brash and badass metal tone with a giant stack of beautiful amps and one Big Muff pedal.

Burn the WITCH by Forest Evil

Which is remarkable to experience, since some less talented hacks need at least 1,101 pedals to find a tone they are happy with. Plug in and play, cowards. (Except Christian Lembach from Whores., who has literally 512 pedals and knows how to use them all correctly.)

There were several PBR’s sacrificed to the heavy metal gods, as well as several frequencies of hearing from the majority of the crowd who were not wearing ear protection.

(“What?” – Me to my girlfriend every day as I remind her that I’ve laid most of my hearing down on a Pentagram-shaped altar. Sacrifices must be made. Hail Satan.)

Forest Evil finished with the crowd in a full frenzy. One excited patron exclaimed, “Why didn’t you play Free Bird?!” To which the band replied, “You didn’t ask!” That’s definitely the first time that’s ever happened.

There was a four-person mosh pit that looked exciting as well. Tom and I did not partake.

Toke delivered the evening’s final sermon.

Orange by Toke – STB-28

The North Carolina, heavily-tattooed trio are stoner metal demagogues built from the slow burn of the first three Sabbath albums, hints of Blue Cheer, Kyuss DNA, sprinkled with hardcore vocals mostly buried behind a wall of sound. Excellent in execution, never boring, dynamic, sludgy, stoner metal made from smoking weed and for smoking weed.

And they make no apologies for who they are, brandishing a gorgeous cannabis leaf as their primary logo.

“The first rule of rock ‘n’ roll: No apologies.” – Punk Rock Bill.

A REVIEW OF: The Graveface Museum ‘Beyond Human’ compilation

Artwork by Chole Manon. Photo by Tom Cartmel at Tom Cartmel’s house.
[Caption written by Joshua Peacock]

Ryan Graveface (not his real name) has carved out his own little esoteric empire in Savannah by basically just doing whatever he wants for the last eight years with his own creepy aesthetic blending sometimes harmoniously with Savannah’s weird vibe.

In addition to the Graveface Records rock ’n’ roll label (the oldest wing of the Graveface corporation), the brick and mortar Graveface Records & Curiosities—conveniently located on W. 41St. —the Terror Vision imprint label (made for horror soundtracks) and the new Graveface label (focused on releasing local to Savannah bands), Mr. Graveface has now added the Graveface Museum to his spooky business portfolio.

The museum is basically a home for Mr. Graveface’s personal collection of weird shit. Like John Wayne Gacy paintings. Fucking weird vibes, man. Also, most everything in the “Museum” is for sale. Because if you’re not trying to sell something in Savannah, you’re not welcome—according to the Savannah City Council.

Mr. Graveface turned to his cult followers for assistance in getting the museum on its legs. He initiated an Indiegogo fund which surprisingly had a video of him with his face fully exposed asking for assistance. Which was weird. Historically, Mr. Graveface does not like revealing his face. I don’t know why. It’s not hideous.

The crowd sourcing fund raised nearly $8,000 with mid-level and top donors receiving a copy of the new Graveface Museum compilation Beyond Human, on vinyl.

For well over a year now, rumors have been circulating in small-ass Savannah about a Graveface compilation album that featured a number of notable local acts. The compilation became part of the Indiegogo reward’s package, rather intentionally or unintentionally.

Supporters of the fundraiser, myself included, got their copy of the Beyond Human vinyl and digital download the first week of the year. Mr. Graveface announced recently he was releasing it to the general public with extra copies of the vinyl addition now on sale at the brick and mortar. Go get it.

Perhaps one of the most peculiar and fascinating compilations ever, Mr. Graveface commissioned local bands to write original songs about serial killers and/or cults. Very creepy. The vinyl edition has 12 tracks, but the digital download includes three additional tracks from Dame Darcy, Jeff Zagers and Rude Dude and the Creek Freaks—the latter of which was probably way too long to include on a vinyl. Rude Dude likes to jam.

For fans of local music, Hotplate has continually, for nearly a fucking decade, delivered the scenes best instrumental metal. Well, pretty much the scene’s only instrumental metal, but whatever.

They are perhaps one of the few bands ever to write a 20 minute song that was not a jam band record. Just loud-ass guitar riff after riff, congealed by a sparse, mathy jazz drumming base, and heavily down-tuned everything.

They might also be one of the few bands ever to have their two guitars set to two different tunings, each of those tunings basically being of original design by its arbiter. Hotplate is a unique concoction.

Beach Fossils and Negative Gemini played Savannah for the first time ever at Savannah Stopover‘s recent announcement party at Service Brewing on Indian Street. It was a great lead-in to the full festival, which takes place March 5-7 in venues in the northwest portion of Savannah’s famed Historic District. Click on through for more photos and visit us again for a variety of Stopover previews (if all goes well).

Servants of the Mist Album Release – Photos

Tampa’s Servants of the Mist have released a new album “Healing Process”. Since I received my copy, I’ve been playing it on repeat, non-stop. It’s heavy, unapologetic, and somber. Throbbing bass overlayed with ethereal guitar riffs, screaming vocals, and the constant crashing of cymbals to form a sound that is both aggressively in-your-face, but also strangely comforting. For any fans of doom, sludge, or metal in general, you gotta check this one out. Photos from the albums release below.
