Obituary @ Victory North – Photos

Obituary played Victory North December 6th with False Prophet and Extinction AD.

Formed in Tampa in 1984, Obituary has (as of 2019) released 10 studio albums and are considered pioneers of the death metal genre.

It was a night of much hair flipping, circle pitting, and Donald Tardy’s sweet, sweet double bass drumming. I was front and center for this one (hence the tight photos) and despite catching a few stray elbows from the pit behind me and the frantic headbanging on stage, I was actually able to grab a few in-focus shots. Each of these bands brought something different to the table, from the opening thrash of Extinction AD to the classic death metal sounds of Obituary, there was a little something for everybody. If you’re a fan of metal – or you just like headbanging to the point of soft tissue damage to the neck and shoulders – this show did not disappoint.

Big Freedia and Low Cut Connie at Victory North – photos

Larissa Allen had some high, high praise of Big Freedia here at hissing lawns after seeing her perform in Atlanta way back in 2013:

The Earl was filled with sweaty bodies bouncing in every way possible while shouting Big Freedia’s call-and-response hooks. She invited crowd members on stage and encouraged hardcore rump shaking. Her DJ spun fast-paced heavy bass beats while her entourage booty bounced in ways I didn’t know were possible. There wasn’t a single person in that room standing still. Freedia’s devotion to supplying the party with the fuel to booty bounce was sincere. It was the most fun I’ve had at a show all year.

Big Freedia finally came to Savannah last weekend — it was just the second night of her nationwide Azz Across America tour with Low Cut Connie — and I’ve been thinking about that amazing night ever since. Hot, hot, hot.

Low Cut Connie got the night off to a great start — if a late start because the show was pushed back so it wouldn’t conflict with Savannah’s first ever pride parade — and then Big Freedia and her thrilling corps of dancers took us all to church.

I took a lot of photos with my little Fuji x100t, but I didn’t try to move around at all during Big Freedia — I liked my spot just stage left. Click on through for lots more

The Black Dahlia Murder, Depressor, and Knightsquatch @ Victory North – photos

“This place still smells new. Let’s piss all over everything and break it in!”

Ah, yes, it was definitely a metal show Friday at the new-ish Victory North, with devil horns, black tee shirts, and power chords galore. I mean, the pee thing suggestion from the headliner was an option, I guess, but I’d like to think most of the crowd was leaning toward “Holy crap, this size bands rarely come to Savannah, this place is pretty cool, maybe let’s not screw it up” instead. Good choice, in my opinion.

Fun night, with strong sets from locals Depressor and Knightsquatch, and a blistering set from long running Michigan death metal merchants The Black Dahlia Murder. Tons of new faces in the crowd (maybe a lot of out-of-towners?), a few crowd surfers, and, at times, a vigorous pit. Security seemed reasonable, discouraging crowd surfing and keeping an eye on the pit, but not being heavy handed (aka dicks) about it. Good job all around, everybody.

I took some photos, check em’ out. Or, you know, not.

Liz Cooper & The Stampede and Parker Millsap at Victory North – photos

No, Liz Cooper & The Stampede and Parker Millsap did not play a double bill, but they both had recent gigs just two nights apart at Victory North, the new venue that is quickly transforming Savannah’s music landscape.

Liz Cooper & The Stampede brought their critically acclaimed psych rock for a great Monday night show, and two nights later, Parker Millsap played a solo gig with Victory North set up as a true listening room.

Our new contributor Dylan Kennedy shot some great photos from both nights:

Bragg Jam: Review + Photos

Bragg Jam is always my favorite festival I regularly attend–I love how spirited the whole downtown Macon area gets for it, there’s great food (shoutout to Doughboy Pizza and Taste & See Coffee Shop!), and the organizers always manage to keep everything running smoothly and on time, which isn’t always a given at festivals.

I was upset to not be able to make it to the shows on Friday–I had a prior commitment I couldn’t get out of. I was upset, as the Friday schedule was the best it’s been since they added a second day a few years back, and missing of Montreal is always a bummer. Nevertheless, I had a blast Saturday evening despite not getting in till a little later than I wanted (I suck at time management).

The first act I saw ended up being my favorite–I had never managed to see American Aquarium before, which was weird because I love their studio stuff. Unsurprisingly, I loved them live just as much. I would’ve stayed longer for their set at the Capitol Theatre, but since I arrived in town late, I wanted to catch as many bands as possible.
