Hey guys,
It looks like there are plenty of good choices for music this weekend, no matter what your tastes may be. I am mostly looking forward to seeing Brother Hawk and Isaac Smith at El-Rocko on Friday and the Prince tribute show at the Jinx on Saturday. But don’t forget about the punk show at the Jinx on Monday and a newer band, Mitch and Nico at Wormhole’s Happy Hour on Tuesday. I have only seen them a few times, but I really enjoyed them. OK, we’re not quick, but we’re thorough. Tom and I took a ton of photos back on 7/9 at The Jinx at the MusicFile Productions gig with NOTS (Memphis), Muuy Biien (Athens), and Cray Bags (Savannah).

It was a night of punk, with all three bands performing crazy good sets. Thanks to Igor Fiksman, who responded to our pleas for light by bringing several portable LEDs that the bands routinely moved around. So if this doesn’t look like The Jinx, that’s the reason. Plan Your Road Trip To Macon’s Bragg Jam Music Festival – July 30th

If you haven’t stood by the side of the stage with a cold beer in your hand listening to some blistering southern rock or blues at Grant’s Lounge in Macon, you’ve missed one of the great music spots in all of the south. It’s old school in the best possible way and it’s time to hit Grant’s Lounge and 19 other venues in Macon in just a few short weeks!

Bragg Jam Music Fest in Macon, GA is Saturday, July 30th featuring 95 performances across 20 stages; by far the biggest lineup in the festival’s 15+ year history.

We’re all over this and not just because it’s The Year of Georgia Music. We love cross pollinating with our Georgia music-mates all the time and so for the 3rd year, Savannah Stopover is taking a bus-load of music lovers from Savannah to Macon for the fest. Sort of a reverse Stopover!

The festival has just released its full schedule with performance times by stage so it’s time to start planning your day to see great acts like Shakey Graves, Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors, Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires, The Weeks and many other Stopover faves like Alanna Royale, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Susto, Great Peacock… and that’s just for starters. Stopover will have it’s own stage at Bragg Jam located at Fresh Produce. It’s a vinyl record shop which also sells fresh produce (yes, it’s as cool as it sounds) and several of your favorite Savannah bands will be playing there including Triathalon, DIP, and Sunglow. Trae Gurley & Jared Hall at Jazz’d – photos

After an evening of shooting concert photography for the Summer Cabaret Series at Lucas Theatre for the Arts I strolled a few blocks down the alley to catch the talented Trae Gurley and Velvet Caravan pianist Jared Hall performing at Jazz’d Tapas Bar. I will admit that I haven’t been to Jazz’d more than a handful of times, but regular performers there include Ray Lundy of Bottles & Cans, Danielle Hicks, and James Lee of Main Street Trio.

On this evening in particular I watched two consummate professionals do their thing, and the bar crowd in the stylish, basement-level venue enjoyed every second of what was essentially a lounge act. Playing to the appreciative audience, Trae & Jared covered Sinatra tunes & jazz standards, interspersed with witty banter that kept everyone entertained. If you ever have a chance to catch these two together, you’ll quickly see that they not only work well together, but enjoy each other’s company.

We write about a lot of popular music & venues at hissing lawns, but often the smaller gigs don’t get as much coverage. Those of us living in Savannah, Georgia are fortunate to have a thriving nightlife, and every single evening of the week this town has live music going on in a variety of places. Amongst the musicians a lot of the ‘stages’ we play are commonly referred to as ‘menu-venues’, in that most folks are coming for the food & drinks, but are also able to hear bands & music while dining. As a musician, it sort of cuts two ways. It’s a unique thing to be able to make a regular income at performing music, but quite often we are regarded more as ambience than the main attraction. This also puts local performers in a difficult position of having a hard time attracting the public to shows when there is a door fee. That being said, most of the players that I count amongst my circle know how to work a room, and play to the crowd according to the venue. I’ve found that if you’re an actual ‘working musician’ in Savannah you get free, on-the-job lessons in how to be a better industry professional, in pretty short order. I digress…on with the show!

We have contributed much asshole culture and music to the world. Tampa specifically, has given the children Assück, Scrog, Death, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Obituary, Reversal of Man, Combatwoundedveteran, Nasty Savage and more. Seputura and Napalm Death came to record here. Cannibal Corpse moved here to live. The Brass Mug is here. Morrisound is here. There are no rules. We are ugly and primitive and short in the attention span. So, as old men, MEATWOUND comes from all that steaming shit pot of geographical music waste and the sounds of our collective childhoods. Word got out a little late about the Meatwound show tonight (Wed., 7/13) at The Jinx, but the gig is worthy of special note because the band has performed with our own Black Tusk (who highly recommend tonight’s show). Meatwound appears to have a busy summer and fall on tap.

Plus, there’s The Jinx’s usual Wednesday night Rock and Roll Bingo.

Reverend Justin Hylton at Foxy Loxy Cafe – photos & video

Last night Atlanta troubadour Reverend Justin Hylton took a full courtyard at Foxy Loxy Print Gallery & Cafe back to the basics, and the cafe’s own roots, by performing sans sound-system. As of late, in an an effort to be heard over the cafe’s required kitchen ventilation system, most acts have been performing at Foxy’s Acoustic Tuesday with at least one PA speaker. Justin strummed & sang through roughly three forty-five minute sets of both his original work, and a broad variety of Roots/Americana music covers. The crowd was appreciative both in applause & the ever-important tip jar, and afterward as I looked through related photos that were posted online it appeared that he’d won over some new fans while in town for this one-off gig.

Justin has been touring extensively for the last few years, and I wrote up a Q & A with him several months ago for hissing lawns which went into more depth about what keeps him out on the sometimes lonely highways, playing different cities every night as a solo artist. He’ll be back in the Lowcountry on July 22nd to share a stage with my own band, Waits & Co., at Bluffton, South Carolina’s newest hot-spot for live music The Roasting Room Lounge & Listening Room.

Punk Mess 2 – review + photos

What to say about Punk Mess 2 that’s not right there in the name? Well, I guess I can expand on it a bit. It was indeed the second Punk Mess, and hopefully just one of many to come. It definitely was messy, with the PBR flowing freely (and maybe flying through the air a bit), a slippery, sloppy pit at times and general reports of hangovers throughout the weekend on social media.

But what about the “Punk” part? It was totally punk, from surf rock to the gnarly garage punk that you can find in seedy, beer-stained dives if you’re both brave and lucky enough. Pretty much everything in between, too. The Dad Joke guys book what they like, and they like grimy, snarling, punk rock with its foot on the gas. A really well curated festival, in my opinion.

I took a bunch of photos, but if it looks like I was taking pictures of rapidly moving people in a dimly lit bar while I was drinking, that’s because I was taking pictures of rapidly moving people in a dimly lit bar while I was drinking. Deal with it. Also, there is no correlation between the number of shots of a particular band in the gallery and how much I dug them. It’s more dependent on the light, where I was standing, where the artists were standing, how worried I was that someone was going to slam into me, you know, that kind of thing. It looks like a decent weekend downtown, pretty good music every night. If you have only seen Steppin Stones at City Market, it is worth checking them out at Barrelhouse South on Friday, they can really rock things out. If you didn’t get enough punk at the Punk Mess last weekend, the punk show at the Jinx on Saturday should be pretty good. After their long tour out West, I am looking forward to catching the Accomplices at the Kayak Kafe on Wednesday. It will be very hot this weekend.
