mark your calendars: 2nd annual Revival Fest slated for 9/20

The 2013 Revival Fest (organized by the folks at MusicFile Productions and Savannah Stopover) was one of the best full days of music that we’ve had in a long time around these parts. (Click here for lots of photos from 2013.) The 2014 version is slated for 9/20.

The Woggles + Superhorse at The Jinx – photos

As hissing lawns blogger Larry Jack noted in his weekly preview, there was a garage rock overload last night at The Jinx.

Savannah’s own Superhorse crowded onto the stage not long after 10 — an early start for The Jinx — and ripped through a set that was familiar to those of us who have long been following the 7-piece band. Superhorse has now been around for 20 years, but the group doesn’t come together much anymore. I can’t even remember the last time I saw Superhorse perform, but it was sure great to see them looking and sounding so good.

Superhorse-1

Superhorse was opening for The Woggles, the kinetic garage rock band that was founded in Athens way back in the 1980s. The crowd at The Jinx sometimes starts thinning out after midnight on Thursdays, but that sure didn’t happen last night. The Woggles were all over the stage, on the floor, on the bar, leaping into the air — I wish more of Savannah’s young musicians had been on hand to see the show.

I took a lot of photos, and I suspect Tom will be posting another set of pics in the coming days. A few more here of The Woggles, and lots of both bands after the jump.

Larry Jack’s Magical Musical Tour 4/24/14-4/29/14

Hey guys,
Another weekend of fun music in the books. As always, I hope that most of y’all caught at least a little of the music going on around town. Just this past weekend, there were a couple of young Savannah bands (Triathalon and Whaleboat) that recently released records, Hang Fire had several good acts (COEDS, Niche, Hudson-K, and Dams), and there was a punk show at the Jinx (Crazy Bag Lady) where I got to see Scottie break up a girl fight in the pit! And I still missed several good shows that I would have liked to have seen (Velvet Caravan, Megan Jean & The KFB, and KidSyc@Brandywine), but even I can’t be everywhere at once.

This week looks like another good weekend too. There is a garage rock overdose at the Jinx on Thursday with Superhorse and The Woggles, surf rock at the Wormhole on Friday, and some good Savannah singer-songwriter shows in great locations on both Sunday night (Savannah Songwriters at Johnny Harris) and Tuesday night (Cory and Aaron at Foxy Loxy Café).

so how much do we like Courtney Love’s new single “You Know My Name”?

Actually, we like Courtney Love’s “You Know My Name” very much. Hard to imagine that she will ever be performing this in the corner of some dark, packed bar like the song deserves to be (think Perfect Pussy at Hang Fire), but I’m suddenly curious to hear more from the Hole frontwoman.

Jacuzzi Boys playing Hang Fire on 5/21

The Miami-based garage rock trio Jacuzzi Boys will be playing Hang Fire in Savannah on 5/21. It’s another great spring gig being presented by Savannah Stopover and MusicFile Productions.

$10 general admission tickets are already on sale.

This should be a super fun gig. Check out Jacuzzi Boys’ latest video:

Triathalon is set to open.

check out The Whigs’ new video “Hit Me” from upcoming album

Great stuff from The Whigs on the new video/single “Hit Me”:

The Whigs’ new album Modern Creation will be released on Tuesday, 4/22. That release will be supported by a monthlong tour. As I write this, you can still stream the new album at Esquire.

The Accomplices’ southern tour kicks off on 4/23, album release party on 5/24

Next week, The Accomplices — the excellent Savannah-based “lowcountry string band” — will head off on a two and a half week southern tour. And note that on 5/24, The Accomplices will have an album release party at Southbound Brewery.

Check out the dates in this recent Facebook post:

dozens (and dozens) of good reasons to check out Record Store Day in Savannah

Here’s what you really need to know about Record Store Day:

This is a day for the people who make up the world of the record store—the staff, the customers, and the artists—to come together and celebrate the unique culture of a record store and the special role these independently owned stores play in their communities.

The annual Record Store Day is this Saturday, April 19.

And take a look at some of the special releases and other deals available at Graveface Records & Curiosities on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m.:

In addition to all that, the Graveface event will also see the release of Creepoid’s new 12″ on the Graveface label, the release of Triathalon’s new 7″, and a performance by Triathalon in the store at 8 p.m. Other bands are also slated to play, but I haven’t seen a full lineup yet. (Click here for more coverage in Do.)

Rodys Audio Warehouse on Mall Boulevard is also participating in RSD. Dozens and dozens of special titles are listed on the Facebook event invitation, and there will be other promotions as well.

Larry Jack’s Magical Musical Tour 4/17/14-4/23/14

Hey guys,
I just read today that one of Savannah’s more colorful characters, Savannah Willie, died .  Willie Page was a City Market regular who would jam on air guitar (and later air organ) with many of the local musicians who play in City Market. He was always a crowd favorite, often earning as much in tips as the singers. I loved to see visitors watching the band suddenly realize that “that guy’s guitar doesn’t have any strings!” during a blazing Willie solo. One of my Willie highlights was seeing Willie growl his way through Mustang Sally one afternoon. Thanks for the memories Willie and good luck on the next part of your journey.

There are several chances to catch some good music this weekend. As a matter of fact, as usual for me, there are too many choices. If you are out on Friday for one show, I would make it the Whaleboat/Fare The Gap show at Hang Fire, I am sure it will be good.  If you are going out on Saturday, you have many options, you can’t go wrong with KidSyc@Brandywine at Social, Niche/COEDS at Hang Fire, Megan Jean & The KFB at Abe’s On Lincoln or Triathalon at Graveface.  Don’t forget, most of these shows are free, so drop a couple of bucks in the bucket, musicians need drug money too.

Thursday 4/17/14
House of Gunt (drag show), Linear Downfall (Nashville experimental/pyschedia), Dams (prog/soul/metal/jam) – Hang Fire
TimeCop vs DangerSnakeMolly MacPherson’s – Rock from Matt Eckstine and Zac Smith of the Accomplices.  Catch them before they start their Southeast Tour.
Sarah Tollerson (pop/folk/indie-rock) – Treehouse – Sometimes, I just want to see what a band sounds like.  And I have never been to the Treehouse, I hope to check it out tonight.
Greg Williams (10-11:30), Whiskey Wednesday (acoustic ragtime & folk-punk) (12-1:30) – Barrelhouse South – Greg Williams is a long-time Savannah singer-songwriter, I don’t get to see him as often as I would like.  And I am interested in hearing what folk-punk sounds like, especially with a little ragtime thrown in.

Friday 4/18/14
OmingnomeAmpersand Grand Opening (9p) – This is the old Sparetime location.  Planetary Projections is handling the light show for Omingnome, I really enjoyed that a few weeks ago at the Barrelhouse show.
Whaleboat, Fare The Gap, Hudson-K Hang Fire – Just go to this show, it will be great
Epic CycleMolly MacPherson’s (10p) – One of my favorite jam bands at one of my favorite bars.
StokeswoodCongress Street Social Club – I saw them a few years ago at Brewfest on Hutchison Island.  Good dance type rock.
Sweet Tease Burlesque, Old Flings (rock/pop/punk) – Jinx (10p) – A drag show on Thursday, a burlesque show on Friday, what is becoming of downtown?

Saturday 4/19/14
Record Store DayGraveface Records (10a-10p) – I don’t have the details, but it looks like Graveface will be making a day of this.  Triathalon will be playing a record release show sometime during the day (I’ll try to update as I find details).  Plus, this will be an all-ages show.
Smith BrothersBub-Ba-Q (6-10p) – This is the old Blowin’ Smoke location on MLK, good food here.  Get your guitar rock fix from this fine group of musicians.  This is another all-ages show.
Velvet CaravanJazz’d (9p) – Gypsy-jazz from some of Savannah’s finest musicians.  If you haven’t seen them, you are cheating yourself.  They are one of Savannah’s best and more original bands.
Niche, COEDS, Needle Points (Philly psych rock) – Hang Fire – There is gonna be some rockin’ at this show tonight (RIP AC/DC)
Flex, Crazy Bag Lady, Forced Entry, Violent ReactionJinx ($5) – Another punk show at the Jinx, be prepared to slam (is that what they still call it?)
KidSyc@BrandywineCongress Street Social Club – I haven’t caught this group in a while, even if you don’t like hip-hop, you will enjoy seeing this band.  It is amazing to me see how fast KidSyc can rap, much faster than I can hear.
Megan Jean & The KFBAbe’s On Lincoln – One of my favorite locations to see music.  Megan Jean has a powerful voice, and is accompanied by her husband on various instruments.  And you will see a washboard.  It sounds like wild gypsy music to me.

Sunday 4/20/14
Charlie Fog BandBarrelhouse South – Grateful Dead music.
Lyn AvenueWild Wing Café – Contemporary country music from this Savannah band.

Tuesday 4/22/14
Ricardo & SashaFoxy Loxy Café – Two members of Velvet Caravan at this fun location.

Velvet Caravan with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra – photos

Well how great is this?

Savannah band Velvet Caravan performed twice this week with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra for their Symphony Under the Stars ($70 per ticket).

From the event description:
This year’s theme is “Carnival” conducted by John Morris Russell, who will be joined by the Velvet Caravan Band. The Velvet Caravan is one of the most unusual ensembles in the music business. Combining Gypsy, Honky-Tonk, Swing and Latin, this band plays upbeat tunes from all over the world with thunderous virtuosity and relentless sense of humor. Bringing together the eclectic sounds are a motley crew of super talented musicians that draw their roots from Venezuela, Serbia, Austin TX, Boston MA, and Southern Georgia.

“When five of Savannah’s most skilled musicians deem their genre “European redneck music,” you know you’re in for an unforgettable treat. Even if the only Django you know is a Tarantino character, you’ll be charmed by the lighthearted, hard-playing dedication of Ochoa, Hall, Monkman, Dunn and Sasha Strunjas,” said the Savannah Morning News.

Many thanks to Jon Waits of JWaitsphoto for the wonderful images. Here are a few — more after the jump.
