Wye Oak, Future Islands, J Roddy Walston & The Business, Oberhofer, Wild Child, Kylesa join Savannah Stopover lineup

Savannah Stopover today confirmed 84 acts for the 2014 festival. Note, however, that we might yet see some new band added to the list, and we haven’t seen the detailed schedule for March 6-8. [UPDATE: Click here to see the bands by day.]

Four Stopover bands are playing Coachella: Wye Oak, Future Islands, J Roddy Walston & The Business, and Bear Hands. That’s kind of a big deal, especially given the quality and critical reception of those acts.

For its 4th installment, Savannah Stopover features a wider array of music than ever. There’s more music from the South, more from international acts, more heavy stuff, and more of the downright fun.

As previously announced, Stopover IV is also featuring three showcases of Savannah-based record labels.

With so much going on, those $75 3-day passes are looking like a better deal all the time, but I’d recommend the upgrade to the VIP ticket.

The international acts include Capsula (Spain/Argentina), Public Service Broadcasting (UK), Esben & The Witch (UK), The Mary Onettes (Sweden), July Talk (Canada), Sean Nicholas Savage (Canada), The Belle Game (Canada), Sierra (Canada), Jagged Vision (Norway), and Peelander-Z (Planet Z).

Good to see that Planet Z is represented; Peelander-Z is a comic book gone wild. I don’t know if Capsula was on anyone’s radar screen here in the Lowcountry until their electrifying set opening for Os Mutantes a couple of months ago.

The musicians returning from either a previous Stopover or the 1st annual Revival Fest are an especially strong group: Oberhofer (2011, 2012), Wild Child (Revival Fest), Matrimony (Revival Fest), Eternal Summers (2012), Milagres (2012), Christopher Paul Stelling (2012, 2013), this mountain (2013), and River Whyless (2012). I missed Eternal Summers in 2012, but I can recommend the rest of those acts without reservation. Oberhofer, of course, headlined opening night in Telfair Square in 2012 and followed that up with an exciting latenight set at The Jinx.

There will be a couple of other returning faces. Dega is a new project of Kalen Nash of Ponderosa, which played the 2013 Stopover. Curtin is the new act of Jason Rueger from Country Mice, which played all the Savannah Stopovers to date.

The festival had previously announced showcases by Savannah-based labels, including the big news of Kylesa’s return to The Jinx with their own label:

March 6th: Retro Futurist Records – (21+ Show) The new label founded by critically acclaimed and globally renowned Savannah metal band Kylesa will feature 4-5 bands at a special showcase Thursday night, 3/6 at The Jinx. Kylesa will headline. Other confirmed acts include Darkentries (Columbia, SC), Jagged Vision (Stavanger, Norway), Sierra (Kitchener, Ontario). This is going to be a hot ticket, for sure. Kylesa routinely packs much bigger rooms than The Jinx — and those bigger venues aren’t in the band’s hometown!

March 7th: Soft Science Records – (ALL AGES Show) The new label founded by Safe // Sound concert promotions founder Gus Muller and Skip Terpstra will host a showcase on the patio at Congress Street Social Club on Friday from 4pm-8pm. Confirmed acts include J. Zagers (Savannah, Ga), Sauna Heat (Savannah, Ga), Cretin Girls (Gainseville, FL) and Triathalon (Savannah, Ga). Soft Science launched just last week (1/9) with a great show and party at Hang Fire.

March 8th: Furious Hooves – (ALL AGES Show) The label founded in 2011 by local artist and musician Ryan McCardle and Virginian TJ Hatcher will present their showcase on Saturday afternoon on the patio at Congress Street Social Club from 2-7 p.m. Confirmed acts include Anteo (Blacksburg, VA), Bedroom (Nashville, TN), Hallucinex (Richmond, VA), Blackrune (Savananh, Ga), and mumbledust (Savannah, Ga).

Stopover has also already released a list of confirmed venues for the 2014 Festival: Knights Of Columbus Hall, The Jinx, Hang Fire, Moon River Beer Garden, Congress Street Social Club, Club One as well as a free Community Concert in Ellis Square to be held on March 8th.

We’ll likely have a number of in-depth Stopover previews here at hissing lawns, but we can possibly cover it all. If there’s a band you’re especially excited about, don’t hesitate to share your thoughts in the comments below on on the hissing lawns Facebook page.
